Serious water damage can occur from several causes: burst pipes, clogged drains, broken skylights or windows, or construction accidents. Unfortunately, much of the water damage that occurs is due to carelessness in taking appropriate action to turn off faucets and remove materials that plug drains (i.e., paper towels, etc.). All water damage, no matter how small, should be reported.
If water leak or water damage occurs or standing water is visible:
-
- If you are confident of your ability to stop the source of the water do so cautiously.
- Notify the SCC. Advise them of the exact location, source, and severity of the leak.
- Notify your supervisor of the extent and location of the water problem.
- If there are electrical outlets, switches, or appliances near the leak, do not touch any metal surfaces (including metal book racks or switches on the stacks). If there is any possible danger of electrocution, evacuate the area.
- Assist as directed in protecting materials that are in jeopardy if safe to do so. Special handling precautions may be required.
- Do not attempt to move wet materials.
- Carefully move dry small or light materials out of the emergency area.
