Chemical Release

Updated 8/4/25

Before an Incident

Familiarize yourself with evacuation procedures and the Chemical Hygiene Plan.

During an Incident

Chemical releases will vary in severity depending on the type and amount of chemical. Employees may be asked to evacuate or shelter in building.

• Inform SCC of spills, releases, or accidents immediately.
• Small releases of low hazard chemicals are to be cleaned by laboratory personnel using
appropriate personal protective equipment. Refer to the Chemical Hygiene Plan for glove and
laboratory coat selection criteria. Safety data sheets are available at MSDS Online.
• Use appropriate spill kits to clean up small acid, base, solvent, mercury, or low hazard chemical
spills.

*DO NOT attempt to clean even minor chemical spills unless you are properly
trained, equipped, and you understand the chemical characteristics of the
material

*Spills, releases, or accidents involving large quantities (beyond the capability of the employee to deal with alone) or high hazard chemicals are to be reported to the Security Control Center, via the emergency number 911. DO NOT attempt clean up on your own.

After an Incident

Any waste generated during chemical spill clean-ups must be collected as hazardous waste utilizing the appropriate hazardous waste tag.
