Definitions

Egress / exit route. A continuous and unobstructed path of exit travel from any point within a workplace to safety outside. An exit route generally consists of three parts: access to the exit; the exit, which provides a way of travel out of the workplace; and the way from the exit to the outside. An exit route includes all vertical and horizontal areas.

Emergency. Any forecasted or unforeseen event that threatens employees, customers, contractors, visitors, or the public; disrupts or shuts down operations; or causes physical or environmental damage.

Emergency Management Committee (EMC). Team comprised of representatives from critical response Divisions who assemble to coordinate response and recovery efforts during and after emergency events. A current list of members is available and additional roles and responsibilities are outlined in the Related Documents section.

EMC Chair. Member of the EMC who oversees the EMC, has the overall authority and responsibility to conduct incident operations, and as applicable, serves as the Incident Commander (IC).

Lockdown. A measure or condition in which people are temporarily prevented from entering or leaving a restricted area or building during an emergency situation.

Shelter-in-Building. A precaution aimed to keep people safe while remaining indoors; specifically, by selecting a small, interior room, with no or few windows, and taking refuge there. It does not mean sealing off the entire building (see lockdown). Shelter-in-place may be required in the event of a variety of emergency situations such as a tornado, a large chemical spill, or an active shooter.
