Fire and Evacuation

If you discover a fire

    • Immediately pull the closest alarm pull station (located near stairwells).
    • Call 911 if it is safe to do so. Give your name, exact location, and nature of the fire (trash can, pantry appliance, etc.).
    • Extinguish the fire if it can be accomplished safely. IMPORTANT: Never allow the fire to come between you and an exit. Fire extinguishers are located next to the stairwells.
    • Leave the area. Do not remain in a smoky area – smoke is deadly.
    • Close doors behind you to confine the fire and its products.
    • Notify the appropriate supervisor of the location and extent of the fire as soon as possible.
    • Proceed to the designated assembly area.

If a fire is reported in your building

    • Leave immediately. IMPORTANT: Do not open a hot door. Check the temperature by touching the door with the back of your hand. If the door is hot or if smoke is visible, do not open the door.
    • Follow directions given by the floor wardens or the person in charge.
    • Do not use the elevators.
    • Do not attempt to save possessions.
    • Proceed to the designated assembly area.
    • If trapped, seek safety in room with an exterior window. Close all doors to slow the spread of fire. Seal cracks around doors with wet towels, clothing, or other materials. Call 911 to describe your location and situation. Wait for rescue or instructions.
    • Do not return to the emergency area until instructed to do so by authorized personnel.

If a fire is reported and/or alarm sounds, but it is not in your area

    • Follow the directions given by Security or authorized personnel.
    • The occupants of the fire floor and the floor immediately above and below it should immediately use the stairs to the ground floor level and proceed to nearest exit and evacuate the building.
    • NOTE: If you hear an alarm, proceed to the nearest stairwell, exit outside to the assembly area, and await further instructions by Security or authorized personnel.
