Floods

Updated 8/4/25

Before an Incident

Understand common causes of floods

  • Burst pipes
  • Clogged drains
  • Broken skylights and/or windows
  • Construction accidents

Do your part to prevent flooding

  • Ensure faucets are turned off properly
  • Do not flush anything other than toilet paper
  • Do not place items such as paper towels in the sinks, this will plug them

During an Incident

If water leak or water damage occurs or standing water is visible:

  • Stop the source of water only if it is safe and you are confident in your ability.
  • Notify SCC and your supervisor of the exact location, source, and severity of the water.
  • If there are electrical outlets, switches, or appliances near the leak, do not touch the water or any metal surfaces (including metal book racks or switches on the stacks). If there is any possible danger of electrocution, evacuate the area.
  • Assist as directed in protecting materials that are in jeopardy if safe to do so. Special handling precautions may be required.
  • Do not attempt to move wet materials.
  • Carefully move dry small or light materials out of the emergency area.
