Aerospace buildings are equipped with emergency generators. In the event of power loss during an emergency, one elevator in each building will remain activate on generator power. Employees, however, will be advised to use the nearest stairwell. The generator will provide emergency lighting in the stairwells and provide lighting on each floor. Power will also be provided to the building’s essential emergency and life safety equipment such as the fire alarm panel, alarms, fire pumps, security system etc.
If a power outage occurs:
- Remain calm.
- Stay put until the emergency lights come on. When switching to the emergency generator, there will be a delay of up to ten seconds between the power failure and the transfer of power from the generator. During this time, locations without natural light sources will be in total darkness.
- Assist visitors and staff in your immediate area.
- Security will notify Facilities or SCC (after normal business hours).
- If you are in a dark area, proceed cautiously to an area that has emergency lights. Use a flashlight if you have one.
- If the elevator car stops between floors or doors do not open, use the emergency telephone in the elevator car to call for help. Do not attempt to exit the elevator.
Lab Teams:
– Shut down any laboratory equipment that could be hazardous if the
power suddenly returns
– Keep laboratory refrigerators and ultra-low freezers closed during the
outage
- If instructed to evacuate, proceed to the designated assembly areas.
- For extended outages, message(s) will be sent out to employees with information and/or instructions
Other Utility Outages and/or Leaks
